You upload your own schoolwork here. This is where it goes, who sees it, and how to get it back out.
What we store
Your name, email address, birth year and the country where you go to school. We keep the last two because the law sets an age below which a parent has to agree: thirteen in Belgium, sixteen in the Netherlands. That tells us which side of the line you are on. We do not ask for a full date of birth, because the year is enough to answer the question.
The material you upload, as text. The original file is not kept: only the readable text taken out of it, which is what everything else works from.
The questions generated from your material, your answers to them, and the mastery scores worked out from those answers.
How much you use StudyWorld, to the minute, and how you first arrived: a search, an advert, a link from somewhere else. The arrival is recorded once when you create your account and never updated. Neither is shared with anyone; both exist so we can tell whether this is worth running.
Who processes it, and where
Three parties see part of your material: our database host and two AI services that read it and write the questions. Nobody else does, and it is never sold or shared with advertisers.
- Supabase (Ireland, EU)
- Stores your account, material, questions and progress.
- AI service for reading material (United States)
- Reads uploaded material to work out what it covers, and writes the first questions of a study set. Under their API terms, material sent this way is not used to train their models.
- AI service for practice questions (outside the EEA)
- Writes the remaining practice questions from your material. Part of what you upload is therefore processed outside the European Economic Area, where data protection law differs from the EU's. If that is not acceptable to you, do not upload material you consider sensitive.
- Stripe and PayPal (payments)
- Process your payment when you subscribe. They receive your name, email address and payment details, never your material. We never see your payment details ourselves.
- Google Play (payments in the Android app)
- If you pay in the app through Google Play, Google processes that payment and keeps track of the subscription. If you choose Stripe in the app, we report that payment to Google, without your material: Google requires this of apps that take payments themselves.
Measuring cookies from Google and Meta
Only with your permission, which you give or refuse in the cookie notice. You can change or withdraw it any time under Cookie settings at the bottom of every page.
Behind the login we send no page views to Google or Meta. Only a successful sign-up or payment is passed on, when you allowed it, without your name or email address.
- Statistics
- Google Analytics (cookies _ga, _ga_*) measures how the public pages are used. Google processes this data, possibly outside the EEA.
- Marketing
- Google Ads (_gcl_au and related cookies) and Meta (_fbp, _fbc) measure which advert led to a sign-up or purchase and can show our adverts again. Google and Meta process this data, possibly outside the EEA.
What we never do
Your material is not used to train any public model, ours or anyone else's.
We do not sell your data, and there are no adverts inside StudyWorld.
A parent following your progress sees mastery per subject, how much you have practised and which topics are still hard. They never see your questions or your answers, not which ones you got wrong, and not what you typed.
How long we keep it
Your material and progress stay until you delete them or close your account. Deleting a study set removes its questions and answers with it. Closing your account removes everything, including anything a parent could see.
You can delete your account in the app (Me, the gear, Delete account) and at studyworld.app/en/account-verwijderen. It happens straight away and cannot be undone.
To stop the free trial being used again and again, we keep an unreadable fingerprint (a hash) of your email address and, in the Android app, of your device. Your address and your device cannot be worked out from it. This fingerprint stays after you delete your account, so that a new account with the same address or on the same device does not get a second free trial.
On first start, the Android app creates a random installation number and uses it to report that the app has been opened, together with the version, the language and the country. That tells us how many people use the app and where. The number belongs to the app and not to your device, and disappears when you remove the app. When you log in, we know which account the installation belongs to; when you delete your account, the installation stays in the count without an account.
We derive the country from your IP address: when your account is created, and each time the app reports in. We keep only the two-letter country code, never the address itself, and we do not pass the address on to anyone for this: the lookup happens on our own server. If that fails, the app uses the country your phone is set to.
Email confirmation and password reset links are deleted once used, and expire on their own within two days and one hour respectively.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask for a copy of everything we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. Write to hallo@studyworld.app and you will get an answer within a month, usually much sooner.
If you are under thirteen in Belgium, or under sixteen in the Netherlands or another country, a parent or guardian has to agree before you can use StudyWorld. They can withdraw that agreement at any time.
